The Data-Intensive Science Centre at the University of Sussex (DISCUS) addresses real social and economic problems. The DISCUS cross-disciplinary team applies data-science and machine learning expertise to fields such as particle physics, astronomy, and computer vision.

We support the UK’s public and private sector organisations to exploit their largest and most complex data sets, delivering beneficial outcomes for the general public, and gaining a competitive advantage on the international stage.

One of the projects we are most proud of in DISCUS is applying astronomy data analysis to enhance disaster forecasting (AstroCast). Read more about this project (and others) on the case studies page.

The Sussex Data Science Meetup

DISCUS, with support from Silicon Brighton and Mojeek, host The Sussex Data Science Meet-Ups. We run meetups giving you a chance to hear about fascinating projects that involve some aspect of Data Science. We have had speakers from both industry and academia, on topics ranging from long covid, drought forecasting, sports betting and energy storage.
